Seamless Migration from 1.6T XDR/800G NDR to 800G NDR Switches Using OSFP-800G-2xFR4H

High-Speed, High-Compatibility Interconnect for NVIDIA Quantum Series

As hyperscale data centers increasingly rely on 1.6T XDR and 800G NDR switches to support AI workloads, efficient interconnection between generations of switch platforms becomes critical. Optech provides a robust solution using OSFP-800G-2xFR4H transceivers to enable seamless connectivity between NVIDIA Quantum Series and Quantum-2 Series switches.

Seamless Migration from 1.6T XDR/800G NDR to 800G NDR Switches Using OSFP-800G-2xFR4H

Architecture Overview

This solution links the following platforms:

  • Left (Quantum Series Switches):

    • NVIDIA Q3200-RA

    • NVIDIA QM9700

    • NVIDIA QM9790
Equipped with OSFP-800G-2xFR4H modules (Finned Top, IHS)

  • Right (Quantum-2 Switches):

    • NVIDIA QM9700

    • NVIDIA QM9790
      Also equipped with OSFP-800G-2xFR4H modules

Optical Link Setup

  • Transceiver Type: OSFP-800G-2xFR4H (Finned Top, IHS)

  • Interface: 4×100G PAM4 (per module)

  • Fiber: Single-mode LC duplex (S2LCUD)

  • Reach: Up to 2km

  • Connections:

    • Each link uses 2× OSFP-800G-2xFR4H modules

    • 4×100G PAM4 lanes from each switch side (total 800G)

    • Fully interoperable across generations

Benefits

✅ Future-Proof Scalability

This solution allows Quantum and Quantum-2 switches to co-exist in the same fabric while enabling upgrades toward 1.6T-ready infrastructure.

✅ Cost-Efficient Migration

By reusing standard OSFP-800G-2xFR4H modules and LC duplex single-mode fiber, data centers avoid the complexity and cost of parallel optics and rewiring.

✅ Compatibility with NVIDIA Architecture

All platforms are part of the NVIDIA® InfiniBand switch ecosystem, ensuring RoCE compatibility and streamlined performance.

✅ Reliability and Simplicity

Using standard PAM4 signaling and FR4 reach (up to 2 km), this architecture delivers low-latency, high-throughput connections with minimal configuration.

Conclusion

For AI clusters, HPC environments, and scalable RoCE networks, Optech's interconnect solution using OSFP-800G-2xFR4H offers a reliable and compatible method to bridge 1.6T/800G switching generations. It simplifies infrastructure scaling while maintaining performance and operational efficiency.
